Help With Fire Risk Assessments

The Regulatory Reform Order

In 2006 the new Regulatory Reform Order 2005 changed the fire safety laws for businesses throughout the United Kingdom. There are now new Fire Regulations which all businesses with business premises must follow. These new regulations fall on the duties of the owner of the building, the employer, and the employees. They are all responsible for the new Fire Safety Order.

If you own or manage a business premise, regardless of the size you must carry out a fire risk assessment. It is now law. There is no need to have a fire certificate any longer. The new legislation completely covers the fire certificate.

A fire risk assessment must be done to assess the risk of fire danger to your employees and to the public. It will point out the weaknesses in your safety procedures for fires. It will also help you to fix any weaknesses and make your workplace safe for all employees.

There is no law that says you have to hire a fire consultant, but if you have a large business or are not sure how to do a fire risk assessment you will want to hire one. A fire consultant knows the Fire Regulations and can make your workplace safe for everyone. They will tell you what you need in order to make your workplace fire safe. A fire consultant will see to it that all safety procedures are put in place and they will educate your employees on fire safety.

It is important to post the fire risk assessment where all employees can see it. You must also keep a copy to show to the fire authorities. The new Fire Regulations will protect you and your employees by showing you where there is fire danger. You must have a fire plan in place and make sure everyone who enters your building knows what it is. Fire exits, fire doors, fire extinguishers should all be made accessible to your employees.

You can be taken to court or have Enforcement Orders drawn up against you if you do not make your premises fire safe. The fire and rescue authorities are responsible for checking to make sure you are following the Fire Regulations properly. You must show them your fire risk assessment when they ask for it.

You will want to make sure you obey the new Fire Regulations. By having a fire plan in place and making sure your fire exits and fire extinguishers are ready you will be protecting your employees, building, and yourself.
